Alexander Gibb, son of Alex and Mary Gibb; husband of Julia Gibb, of Hendon, Sunderland, County Durham, enlisted in the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Craftsman Gibb successfully completed his glider training and was posted to 1st Airborne Division Workshop, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Cfn Gibb is known to have been killed, aged 24, by a German sniper when coming out of a house near the Tafelberg Hotel. He was given a field burial in a mass grave 150 yards south of the hotel in Oosterbeek and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 3 September 1945.
