Lance Corporal James Grace

James Grace, son of Mr and Mrs J Grace, of Dublin, Irish Republic; husband of Elsie Grace, of Langhope, Gloucestershire, enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Grace was posted to 223 Air Despatch Company, RASC, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Grace was killed in action, aged 28, on 19 September 1944 when Dakota FZ-626 of RAF 271 Squadron, based at Down Ampney, was hit by Flak on a re-supply mission and crashed , partly demolishing a house on Bakenbergseweg 262, Arnhem. The casualties were buried in the garden and re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 6 September 1945, but L/Cpl Grace’s grave was not positively identified until December 1988.
