Sergeant Frederick W Greenhill

Frederick William Greenhill, son of Frederick Charles and Alice Greenhill; husband of Irene Greenhill, of Barking, Essex, enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Greenhill successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to E Squadron, 2nd Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Greenhill was killed in action, aged 28, on 25 September 1944 when trying to withdraw from a position at the end of Paul Krugerstraat into houses in Nassaulaan at dusk and running across an open patch of ground he was hit by enemy machine gun fire. He was given a field burial at the edge of a field near the corner of Bothaweg and Oranjeweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 28 August 1945.
