John Christopher Greene, son of John and Elizabeth Greene, of Wolverhampton, enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Greene successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to B Squadron, 1st Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Greene was killed in action, aged 27, on 20 September 1944 by a burst from a Spandau machine gun whilst climbing out of a slit trench with his Bren gun, and was given a field burial near the Van Hofwegen laundry, Ploegseweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 1 November 1945.
