I am proud to say that this man was my Uncle, my mum's brother, and was Godfather to my first born daughter. I knew him very well, he had the most infectious laugh and did tell me once about the "hang up" like it was something of an everyday occurrence, he was taken prisoner at Arnhem (Operation Market Garden) and spent the rest of the war at Stalag X1B in Fallingbostel, however, he refused to go to the down the lead mines for the Germans, was taken away from the others and he thought he was going to be shot, instead the CO of Stalag X1b put him to work with an Austrian Officer in the German Army who had lost an arm, I think they must have admired his gumption, as he got more food too... His family listened to Lord Haw Haw on the radio and his name was read out one night so they knew he was still alive..
