This is an early photo prior to the issue of any special insignia. Note that some of the men are wearing metal parachute wings above their breast pocket; these were issued by the parachute manufacturer rather than the Army. The RAF complained that only qualified aircrew were entitled to wear wings in this position and subsequently cloth wings were issued to qualified parachutists to be worn on the right shoulder.
The men are also wearing the special issue high ankle boots with 'Sorbo' rubber soles. While these were suitable for parachuting they proved impractical for any kind of distance marching and were eventually discarded.
