Description
Colin Nash commented " The soldier sitting to the far left in the front row, is my father, James Thomas Nash. He is holding the unofficial Company mascot, a dog called Peter. My father joined The South Wales Borderers in 1930 and volunteered for No. 2 Commando in 1940. He was one of the original members who later transitioned to the 11th SAS, which eventually morphed into the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment. I don't know if you're familiar with the story of Peter the dog but there's a detailed story about my dad and Peter in the book, Churchill's Volunteers: A Parachute Corporal's Story, by Reg Curtis. The story tells of how a stray dog was adopted and loved by the men. My dad fabricated a pouch which attached to his chest and Peter would parachute into action with the men. While in North Africa, my dad was injured in one of their final battles. He had to stay behind to receive medical care while the rest of the men were shipped back to England. The men promised to take care of Peter until my dad could rejoin the men at a later date. They smuggled the dog onboard the ship but Peter was unfortunately spotted by a Petty Officer while the men were scrambled to attend a fire drill. They were only one day out of returning to England and the Petty Officer ordered the dog to be put overboard. A very sad ending for Peter and the men were enraged. They went on mission to find the Petty Officer to dish out some retribution but they never did find him as he was carefully hidden from his hunters."
