Description

IWM Image  BU 1103. Originally titled "Men from 15 and 16 Platoon’s, C-Company, 1st Bn, The Border Regiment. Van Lennepweg, Oosterbeek." Thursday, 21st September 1944. In the foreground are stragglers from other units, L-R: Pte. W. Preen (1st Para Bn) [not possible as he was part of ‘Lonsdale Force, KIA: 24/09/44], Pte. G. Noye [not possible as he KIA: 19/09/44], D. Hill and Cpl. J. Jones (all 10th Para Bn). 

They are all facing towards No 14 Van Lennepweg.

Just for info, these men are NOT Border Regiment. Men of Borders are in the ditch at the far side of the road (Van Lennepweg). The four men closest are from A Coy, 10 Para, who became detached from the main Battalion as it entered the Divisional Perimeter from Wolfheze on Weds 20/9/44. From left to right: Pte Fred 'Jacko' Jackson; Pte 'Paddy' Brown; Pte Dave 'Titch' Hill and Cpl Jimmy Jones- All A Coy- They stayed fighting on the western side of the perimeter throughout and never rejoined 10 Para during the battle. All escapee on Op Berlin except for Jacko Jackson who was WIA/POW.
