Picture of leading Arab Nationalist, Fawzi al-Qawuqji, found in possessions of Cpl. Albert Holtom. Writing on front reads "Fawzi Mounted", and on rear "Killed 46 British Troops. Fine Soldier:- Captured and escaped 8 times". The only other known copy of this photograph is held in the Palmach Museum in Tel-Aviv, and was deposited there by late Motke Bentzur, a former intelligence officer in the Harel brigade of the Palmach, the elite fighting force of the Jewish underground army. Originally recorded as having been taken in 1948, based on the copy belonging to Cpl. Albert Holtom, the Palmach Museum now believes it to have been taken as early as 1936. Before and after the Second World War, Fawzi fought against the British Army in both Palestine and Iraq. During the Second World War, he was promoted to Colonel in the German Armed Forces, where his name and reputation facilitated close relationships between Axis Powers and pro-Nazi Arab factions.
