Description
3911012. Sergeant William Daniel Jones, 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion.
On the night of 24th April 1944 at MONTE CROCE Acting Sergeant JONES' Platoon Commander left the Platoon’s position with a Royal Engineers party to sweep a path through the minefields. A/Sgt. JONES who was on duty in the O.P. [observation post] heard 2 explosions and immediately realized that the party had met an accident. He proceeded to the minefield, negotiated two tripwires attached to mines, and found the whole party wounded and stunned, with the exception of one R.E. Corporal who had disappeared. Both Lieut. Pearson's legs were blown off. He administered morphia to the wounded, applied tourniquets to Lt. Pearson's legs, and then cut the trip wires, and carried the 3 wounded ORs [other ranks] out of the minefield.
Sgt. Jones now returned to the P1. C.P. [platoon command post] and telephoned for stretcher bearers to remove the 3 ORs. He then entered the minefield again, guided in the fourth S.B. [stretcher bearer] party and removed Lt. Pearson.
He then searched for the missing Sapper but could find no trace of him and to save further casualties on the mines he was ordered out of the minefield. At first light 25 Apr. 44, however, he again entered the minefield and succeeded in finding the missing R.E. Corporal, and bringing him in.
Throughout the night, A/Sgt. Jones showed a magnificent example of courage, devotion to duty, and disregard for his own safety. He entered the minefield, without guide or help, on four occasions to bring men out and, due to his gallantry, all but one of the party survived.
