My grandfather, a dutchman, was one of the hundreds of thousands slave laborers that survived the industrial camps of Kiel. He escaped execution although he took part in what the Germans like to call 'sabotaging elemements'by loading torpedoheads either too light or too heavy and such. It was not until now i learnt of a name of one of his liberators. It may please you to know my grandfather was able to raise a lovely family despite the many bombings he had to endure during the years of the Nazi regime from 1942 (picked up in a razzia whilst hiding in Eindhoven factories of Philips after resistance activities in Rotterdam, Gorinchem and Amsterdam) till 45. If anything its that most survivors of these laborcamps never or nearly never talked of their experiences. My grandfather was no exception to this. Even moreso as slavelaborers coming back from Germany were often even seen as collaborators in the early years after the war. It is perhaps why i would like to learn more of the conditions you found when serving there since i intend to visit the actual places my grandfather was held in the short future. Any documentation or intelligence of whereabouts of these ArbeitsErziehungslager/Straflager would proof to be most useful. If interested i would love to share some of the stories my grandfather told me before he passed on.
