The city of Catania is on the coast of Eastern Sicily, between Messina and Syracuse. Catania War Cemetery is 7 kilometres south west of the city.
Following the end of the North African campaign in May 1943, an allied force of 160 000 soldiers invaded Sicily. The 1st British Airborne Division spearheaded the invasion, capturing the Ponte Grande Bridge and Primosole Bridge in the face of heavy enemy resistance.
Catania War Cemetery contains 2135 Commonwealth burials from the Second World War, of which 113 of them remain unidentified.
