Altmark Sign

Jim Smith (Orderly Room Sgt) notes in the December 1986 edition of the NEWSLETTER, on page 2 about the ‘Altmark sign’.

"The plaque was actually two inscribed boards bolted either side of a pair of uprights and read (roughly translated) “Here at Jossingfjord the British sea pirate “Cossack” boarded the mercy ship “Altmark”. One half of the board, I think, found its way to the Airborne Museum and the other was indeed sent to Admiral Vian who (Freddie said later) mounted it in the “Cossack”. Those who saw Jossingfjord will appreciate the seamanship required to get the destroyer into and out of that fjord without assistance"
