Airborne logisticians train on the beach, December 2024

A dull and drizzly morning (Thu 12 Dec) did not dampen spirits as 13 Air Assault Support Regiment Royal Logistic Corps (13 AASR) headed to Mersea Island for a festive session of physical training at the seaside.

From press-ups in the breaking waves of the Blackwater Estuary to a log race along the beach’s shifting sands, the session made for a refreshing – albeit chilly - change to the troops’ fitness routine.

Staff Sergeant Kim Bowling, who oversees fitness and sport for the regiment, said: “We wanted to do something to a bit different and get away from the gym or the usual running routes for a fun and competitive fitness session together. I think it was very obvious that we were going to finish in the sea as soon as we arrived, but
everyone got stuck in and were smiling! It’s been a great way to mark the end of the year and send everyone off on their well-deserved Christmas leave.”

The role of 13 AASR is to provide logistic and equipment support to 16 Air Assault Brigade, the British Army’s global response force. In 2024, its troops have used their specialist air dispatch skills to parachute humanitarian aid into Gaza and taken part in training across both the UK and the world.
