William Stewart Donaldson was the son of William and Lilian Donaldson and the husband of Geraldine (Jill) Donaldson, of Wimbledon, Surrey. He was commissioned and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Donaldson successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway. He was on course number 108 which lasted from from 20 to 29 March 1944 and was posted to command 11 Platoon, C company, 156th Battalion the Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Donaldson was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 25, and was given a field burial in an isolated group of graves at the corner of Zonneheuvelweg. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 3 September 1945.
