William Raymond Burns, son of Sidney and Mrs Burns and husband of Elsie Burns, of Kinsley, Yorkshire, commissioned into the King’s Regiment (Liverpool) and volunteered for airborne forces.
Captain Burns successfully completed his Glider training and was assigned to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He was attached as Brigade Intelligence Officer to Headquarters, 1st Airlanding Brigade.
Capt Burns was killed on 20 September 1944, aged 31 and given a field burial about 180 yards west of the Hartenstein Hotel, Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 10 September 1945.
