Mervyn 'Harry' Cardwell enlisted into the Irish Guards in 1960 and was Irish Guardsman and had a Northern Irish sense of humour.
He completed The Guards Parachute Company Hardening course and Pegasus Company in 1963. He was great Pals with Pete McKenna IG RIP and Danny Sinclair IG. He did Both Operational Tours of Borneo 1964/65 including a sudden short Operational tour of Cyprus with 16 Parachute Brigade deployed on New Year’s Day January 1964 then coming back for jungle warfare Patrol training .including courses on Morse Code HF Radio, 128 sets, Courses at The Army School of Health Patrol Medic, Malay Language Translator, Ulu Navigation etc. to backup 22 SAS Regiment in Borneo by April 1964.
Harry won the respect of 22 SAS Regiment. Quote from their Commanding Officer in 1964:
"LCpl Mervyn Harry Cardwell IG completed 6 years exemplary service For God Queen and Country!"
He Continued to serve in HM Prison Service as a Prison Officer .
