Alastair Ira Slater's service with The Parachute Regiment included a tour as a Cpl instructor at Depot, The Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces, while the BBC made a TV series about the training and selection process for paratroopers. It was subsequently broadcast under the title 'The PARAs'.
He subsequently passed selection for 22 Special Air Service Regiment and served with B Squadron but was later killed on an operation against a four man unit of the IRA in County Fermanagh who were attempting to bomb an RUC police car.
Al Slater died on 2 December 1984, aged 28 years.
