Alexander Waddell, the son of Alice Waddell, of Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, enlisted into The Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Waddell successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 126 from 23 July to 5 August 1944. His course report stated ‘good performer, quick to learn, cheerful’. He was posted to 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.
He took part in the 6th Airborne Division response to the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes, during Winter 1944-5.
Pte Waddell was killed in action on 3 January 1945, aged 19, and was buried in Bure, Tellin, (Belgium) temporary burial ground. He was later reinterred in Hotton War Cemetery on 21 May 1947.
