Adam Robert Hunter was the son of Daniel and Isabella Hunter, of Whitletts, Ayr. He was commissioned into the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Hunter successfully completed his glider training and was posted to C Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Hunter was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 21, and was given a field burial in an isolated grave at the rear of the Psychiatric Hospital at Wolfheze, Oosterbeek, as an unknown soldier. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945 and the grave was finally identified in 1982.
