Private Herbert Slack

Herbert Slack, son of Clara Slack of Ripley, Derbyshire and husband of Frances Bessie Slack of Congleton, Cheshire. He joined the Army 1 April 1940. He was a member of the Grenadier Guards before volunteering for the airborne forces.

Private Slack attended parachute Course 8 at RAF Ringway from 10 to 24 February 1942 and was posted to 11 Platoon, T Company, 1st Battalion, the Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Torch in North Africa.

Pte Slack died of wounds "whilst in enemy hands" on 4 February 1943, aged 27. He is commemorated on the Medjez-El-Bab memorial.
