Lance Corporal William J Gyllenship

William John Gyllenship, son of Mr and Mrs R Gyllenship and husband of I R Gyllenship, of Coulsdon, Surrey, enlisted into The Royal Corps of Signals.

Private Gyllenship volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on course 50 which ran at RAF Ringway from 8 to 22 February 1943. The course reports states: ‘Pte Gyllenship. Very good- Well above average.’

Pte Gyllenship was posted to The 21st Independent Company, a Parachute Regiment pathfinders unit and served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

He jumped into Arnhem on 17 September 1944 on Operation Market Garden.

Lance Corporal Gyllenship died of wounds on 26 September 1944. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial of the Missing at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
