16 Parachute Field Ambulance, RAMC Deployment.

The 16 Parachute Field Ambulance, RAMC would be split between the two main lifts on Operation ‘Market’.

The 1st Lift, on Sunday, 17 September 1944, would consist of 120 men, 117 in Parachute Aircraft, and 3 men by Horsa glider. [1]

The 2nd Lift, on Monday, 18 September 1944, would consist of 17 men in Horsa gliders.

1st LIFT.

In Serial A24, aboard a C47 A/C, Chalk No: 47, would be 20 men of No 2 Section.

In Serial A25, aboard a C47 A/C, Chalk No: 83, would be 20 men of No 3 Section.

Both of these would fly from Saltby aerodrome.

In Serial A26, aboard a C47 A/C, Chalk No: 119, would be 20 men of No 1 Section.

In Serial A27, aboard 3 x C47 A/C, Chalk No’s: 144 to 147, would be 57 men of the HQ (including the two Surgical Teams) and No 4 Section’s.

These four aircraft would fly from Barkston Heath aerodrome.

All the parachute aircraft would drop on D.Z. ‘X ‘.

One of the 1 Parachute Brigade Headquarters Horsa gliders (Chalk No’s: 473 – 478) was allocated to the 16 Para Fld Amb, and would fly from RA Keevil to LZ ‘Z’. On board were 3 men and 2 x medical configured jeeps. [2]

2nd LIFT.

5 x Horsa gliders (Chalk No’s: 945 – 949) with 17 men (11 of which would be RASC [3]), 5 x jeeps + 4 trailers and 6? x M/C’s, would fly from RAF Fairford to LZ ‘X’.
