Sergeant Harold F Whittingham

Harold F Whittingham enlisted into the RA 50 Hvy Regiment Army in Dover. Then volunteered for the airborne forces.

He was one of the very early men selected to be parachute jump trained and was initially trained before any known formal records were kept. Then at RAF Ringway he took part in Advanced Course 4. This course ran between 3 and 7 February 1942. Records state he was a member of No.2 Commando, the 11 SAS and finally 1st Parachute Bn, HQ Coy Mortar Pln.  

Harold saw service in N.Africa, Sicily, Italy and Arnhem. 

During Op. Market garden he received a gunshot wound in the left thigh and was eventually taken POW. He was held at Stalag 11B and given the POW number 118371.

Harold joined the Reserves 6 February 1946
