Private James G Broadfoot

James George Broadfoot was the son of Robert David and Frances Louise Broadfoot, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Canada, in Toronto on 5th November 1942 and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Broadfoot arrived in the UK on 28 July 1943 and successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course number 80. This course lasted from 30th August to 9th September 1943. His course report stated “Nervous but reached an average standard”. He was posted to B Company, 4 Platoon, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Broadfoot was killed in action on 6th June 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial at Douville, France. He was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France on 5th September 1945.
