Lieutenant Edward 'Ted' Pool was recommended for an award for action in the Normandy campaign. The following is an extract from Public Records Office (ref WO 373/48):

Action for which commended: (Date recommendation passed forward 12 July 1944)
Lt Poole's [sic] pl were required to hold an outpost on the Western Bridgehead held by the Airborne tps over the CAEN canal at BENOUVILLE. He held this outpost for 21 hrs on 6 June 1944 during which time he was almost continuously attacked by superior forces. Lt Poole's personal example, cheerfulness and bravery were an inspiration to all who served under him. In addition, he led numerous offensive patrols which played a material part in the successful action of this Bn.
